PUB researcher Brian Tarry of Rainford has come up with a frothy fact that should really tickle the taste-buds of our local elbow-benders.
Compiling his recently-published book, 'The Lost Pubs of St Helens', he discovered that the district once had five brewers in action at the same time.
Perusing trade directories for the early 1800s he found them listed as James Eckersley of Parr Stocks, Edward Greenall (Hall Street) William Hill (Dentons Green) Charles Speakman (Church Street) and Ralph Tickle (Thatto Heath).
Five years later the name of William Hill was missing, but 'John Cross of Leather Hill, Sutton' had been added to the trade list.
What Brian would like to know is, where was Leather Hill?
