MANY Millennium ideas have been mooted but are on a scale which means that not everyone can afford to join in. So why not a local carnival, or a revival of the Whit Walks for one year only?
The Whit Walks were church-orientated but in today's multicultural society people could just walk as a church or religious group, as a school, club, street or neighbourhood, or as a works.
Perhaps readers can imagine the rich tapestry of heritage; the flags and banners of the churches, trade unions and uniformed groups; the statues of the religious groups; the icons of the East, and rose queens. There could be a gathering on a town centre car park and a procession to Walker's Field for a fun day, or perhaps just a walk around the town as a united community.
It may cause a bit of a headache for the police and emergency services but it would be great way for the town to celebrate the Millennium through an event that everyone can afford to join in.
