GOAL hero Micky Mellon is confident that Burnley's new-look side can hit it off sufficiently to keep the Clarets up after his equaliser stopped the rot at Wrexham.

Only four of the Burnley side that beat the Welshmen last October were engaged at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday as Stan Ternent's men ended a run of four defeats with a battling 1-1 draw. And Mellon, who secured a point with the Clarets first goal in five games, believes the vastly altered line-up is beginning to gel.

He said: "We feel we are a different team now. There are a few lads that have been added and a few lads that have been bought recently. We are a different team probably to the one that played two months ago.

"We are getting to know each other better and looking around the dressing room we have got the ability to get out of trouble.

"All the games are important from now on in. There's 10 to go and we have got to take something from every one of them. We know that and we are capable of doing that." Mellon's 75th-minute strike was as clinical as it was welcome for the Clarets who had trailed for an hour.

And it came as an extra relief for the midfield man, whose mis-placed pass allowed Dave Brammer to rifle Wrexham ahead with a spectacular strike.

"I was disappointed. We started off so well. We played very well in the first 10 or 15 minutes, as well as we have played since I've been here and the guy scored a one-in-a-million goal. But sometimes that's how it goes when you are near the bottom.

"I was just pleased to end the drought because we haven't scored for a few weeks and just pleased to get the result.

"All afternoon we threatened to score and we were really unlucky to go one down. I think they really had only two shots at goal so it's a satisfying point for us," added Mellon, who nevertheless felt Ternent's men might have sneaked all three.

"The referee said there are 12 minutes to go I think it was when we scored. We were pushing and I think they were hanging on a wee bit at the end and we were unlucky not to come away with the full three points," he said.
