THE boss of one of East Lancashire's biggest firms has criticised the Government over the economy.

Tony Rink's comments came as Darwen-based Wolstenholme Rink announced a small rise in profits last year - despite the strength of the pound costing it an estimated £500,000.

"The Government's handling of the economy, resulting in comparatively high interest rates and a strong pound, is very damaging to exporters like ourselves," said joint chairman Mr Rink.

Last month the firm, which employs more than 200 people in Darwen and manufactures products for the printing industries, said it was looking for 14 job-cuts partly because of the difficult export position.

Today's results showed the firm made £7.66 million in pre-tax profits compared with £7.57 million in 1997 and sales increased from £84 million to £86 million.

Mr Rink said despite difficult trading conditions the firm was positive about the future prospects of the group.

"We are determined to maintain and improve our global market position and we will improve margins through high quality, efficient production and tight cost control," he said.
