The arsonists trapped 45-year-old Brian Salisbury and two girls, aged 17 and 19, in the flat by jamming a wheelie bin against the door, dousing it in petrol and setting it alight.
The three escaped by jumping out of a first floor window.
A fire brigade spokesman said that the trio was lucky to escape.
Preston police are now investigating the blaze and anyone with information should call them on 01772-203203.
