Liverpool Collegiate 20 Ruskin Park 25 RUSKIN were made to fight all the way for this narrow victory in a highly entertaining game.
After the respective kickers, Fisher and Walsh, had shared four penalties, Ruskin took the lead, when Jones sliced through the defence for a fine try.
Back came the home side, and a neat try by scrum-half Zalk, converted by Walsh, put them ahead. Within a minute, Ruskin were back in front, when full-back Mousley joined in the line and went over in the corner.
Fisher converted with a great kick, to bring up his 100 points for the season.
With the slope in their favour in the second half, all looked favourable for Ruskin, and when Fenney seized on a mistake by Zalk to score near the posts, a comfortable win seemed on the cards.
But an injury to Ross disputed the pack, and Collegiate began to dominate. On the hour they drove over the line for a try, which Walsh converted, and from then on put Ruskin under tremendous pressure, as they sought another.
They seemed to have succeeded, as they once again drove over from close range, but the referee was unsighted and disallowed the score, giving Ruskin a welcome, if somewhat fortunate victory.
At home, the 2nd XV had a comfortable 38-8 victory over Collegiate, with veteran Paul Ridgeon being the outstanding player, claiming two of the six tries scored.
