Bold Miners 12 Pilkington Recs 18 A LARGE crowd was treated to a great Hays Chemicals St Helens Cup derby.
Pilks ran out eventual winners due to their better discipline in the early stages when Bold had a player dismissed for arguing with the referee and were forced to play three quarters of the game with 12 men.
Pilks started well and scrum-half Burrows darted over for a fine try after only five minutes of the game, he also added the goal. Pilks scored again when winger Del Farro crossed in the corner to make the score 10-0.
Wayne Graham replied for the Miners with a penalty goal.
Del Farro added his second try to put Pilks further ahead. The Miners came back up the field and Nick Joseph powered over for a great try, Wayne Kenyon adding the goal.
Pilks replied straight away when Del Farro completed his hat trick just before the break.
In the second half 12-man Bold were running Pilks ragged with strong running from Gary Talbot, Brian Connaire and Lee Bednarzyk pegging Pilks back in their own half. Nick Joseph blasted over for his second try for the Miners and two minutes later looked to have scored again but the referee disallowed the touchdown.
It was all Bold now, yet somehow the Pilks defence stayed firm.
Nick Joseph took the Grundy Excavations man of the match award ahead of Dave Scott and Chris Burgess.
