The woman was walking along Lewis Street, St Helens, at the rear of St Thomas' Church, at about 12.15pm on Sunday, February 28, when she was approached from behind by the youth. He grabbed her handbag and a scuffle broke out before the would-be robber ran off empty-handed.
The youth is described as white, about 15 years, 5ft 5in/5ft 6in tall with a thin build and short, mousey-coloured hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured tracksuit.
Anyone who can help the police with their inquiries can contact DC Nat Boyd at St Helens CID on 0151 777 6064, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
