LEIGH MR finally turned the key towards possible safety as they put the lock on Lock Lane in a stunning 34-10 win.
They were boosted by Howard Newton's hard spotting defence and an adventurous attack which produced five spanking tries.
Newton's blockbusting 70-metre burst for the first try set Miners on the way, quickly followed by a Steve Flannery TD after good work by Paul Daniels and Mick Warburton.
Peter Sharp added another try before the break, Chris Wilkinson adding a field goal to his three conversions.
Both sides slugged it out after the interval . . . plenty mistakes, little to cheer.
But Lee Stretch then scooped a lose ball to blast in, Wilko again on target.
The Cas side edged back as the MR machine began to stutter in an edgy spell, brightened only by another Wilkinson drop.
Then, in a final flourish, Mark Sarsfield grabbed a try, and Wilko completed his 100% goalkicking spell with two more successful pots.
Miners U18s beat West Hull 42-6 . . . "if only they could play like this every week," said frustrated coach Kevin Doorey.
Tries from Simon Hartley 3, Richard Varkulis 2, Paul Redfern, Sean Frawley, Andrew Gorski and Tommy Goulden.
