FORGET the battle of the roses - it's two teams in red who are set to come face-to-face next season.

The University of Central Lancashire and Lancaster University will do battle next year in the inaugural Lancashire Cup competition.

The two Universities will fight it out for the trophy at the UCLa's new Cottam sports centre just before Christmas.

The competition will take an Olympic-style format with as many competitive sports taking part as possible. Each win will add three points to the university's overall score, while a draw will add just one point.

Recreation officer James Brown said: "The Lancashire Cup will provide a focus point for sport in the first term

"Hopefully, it will become an annual event. We already have a rivalry with Lancaster, but this can only help build it as it will provide an intense form of competition."
