SIR - ON page one of your shock issue (Citizen, March 18) reported that one person in three killed on the roads in Fylde is over the age of 50.

You went on to suggest that mature pedestrians should refer frequently to the Highway Code, have their eyes tested regularly and wear bright clothes because "motorists often say they don't see you in time" - what impertinence!

I am a driver over the age of 50 and, like many older people and spectacle wearers in particular, have my eyes tested regularly.

Perhaps it is those motorists who "don't see you in time" that should have their eyes tested.

Especially anyone who says: "There's nothing wrong with my eyes".

How many younger motorists regularly brush up on their Highway Code once they have passed the driving test?

Very few, I suggest.

Since the published statistics reveal, indirectly, that two in three people killed on the roads are under 50 (twice as many as the older folk), shouldn't it be those people to whom the campaign is addressed?
