THURSDAY was an historic day for workers - thanks to Makerfield MP Ian McCartney.

This week, the Golborne MP who recently suffered a minor stroke, was praised for his contribution in helping to bring in a new higher minimum wage by Wigan Council leader Peter Smith.

Over 1,000 people in the borough will benefit from the new legislation.

Cllr Smith said: "Ian's courage and determination and political skill helped to overcome opposition from both all sides of the argument and ensure that these workers, about two thirds of whom are women, will notice the real change to their pay packets.

"I am sure that local people would wish to acknowledge Ian's contribution. Ian had in the past himself suffered from the scandal of low pay and was determined not to forget this group as a government minister.

"We all hope he will soon be well enough to return to his office and fight more battles for local people."
