SINGLE pensioners should cancel their British Telecom contracts and use mobile phones instead, says David Chaytor.
The Bury North MP, who is campaigning against standing charges in general, urges residents to switch to pay-as-you-go phones.
He told Parliament that BT's current "low cost" packages were not good enough. Until they come up with a better scheme, he says most elderly people will save cash by going mobile.
"Standing charges are unfair to infrequent phone users and are a particular problem for pensioners living on their own," said the MP.
