A ST HELENS-born scientist has been awarded a major accolade by the British Diabetic Association for his tireless research into the condition.

Former Cowley High pupil Mark Dunne is the Professor of Biomedical Science at Sheffield University and has been awarded the RD Lawrence Award for his "outstanding contribution to understanding diabetes."

Mark's research is partly funded by the BDA and he and his students now have several ongoing projects including developing an understanding of how insulin is released into the pancreas and developing surrogate human cells with the ultimate aim of finding a cure for the condition.
