ANDY Payton should perhaps have thanked Tom Cowan for ending his goal drought - even though it was Micky Mellon who laid on the chance for Payton to score his first goal in 10 games against Macclesfield.

Cowan revealed after the Clarets' last-gasp 4-3 win that he had never doubted Burnley would win.

And the mystic defender also claimed that he had predicted a Payton goal.

"I told Payts before the game that he would score.

"I did the same thing last season to Wayne Allison when we were having a bit of a struggle at Huddersfield," said Cowan.

However, Burnley's new signing wasn't rushing to the bookies to back Payton as first goalscorer at Notts County this afternoon after he was unable to keep Allison's run going.

"I tried it again the next week but it didn't work. I can only do it once !" Cowan confessed.

BURNLEY will not face old favourite Gerry Harrison again this season after the former Clarets defender joined Hull City and NOT Northampton Town on transfer deadline day.

Harrison has linked up with his old Turf Moor team-mate Warren Joyce to try and keep the Tigers in the Football League.

And his debut coincided with a 1-0 win at Southend to lift Hull to fourth from bottom of the Third Division.

The confusion arose when a check with Sunderland's evening paper to confirm that there is only one Gerald Harrison brought the answer that he had gone to Northampton. However, Harrison's long-term future may yet lie at Luton Town, where he was recently on loan, who are still keen to sign him on a permanent basis once their financial problems have been resolved.

MICHAEL Williams made his Oxford United debut as a substitute following his deadline day move from Turf Moor.

And even though it was the 89th-minute before Williams came on at Sheffield United, Oxford converted a 1-1 scoreline into an invaluable 2-1 win when was on the pitch.

YOUNG supporters will be able to watch Burnley's Easter Monday clash against Colchester for just £1.

Under-16s will get redcued admission to the lower tier of the James Hargreaves Stand but tickets must be bought from the Turf Moor ticket office before Monday.

Monday's deal follows the success of letting youngsters in for a £1 against Macclesfield when over 850 took up the offer.

WIGAN'S Ray Mathias was named as the Second Division manager-of-the-month for March. The Latics slipped up against Stoke last Saturday but had won eight games on the bounce before that to challenge for the play-offs and reach the Wembley final of the Auto Windscreens Shield.

FORMER Burnley player David Miller, son of ex-manager Brian, has been appointed assistant boss at Conference club Morecambe.

BURNLEY followed a well-worn route when they travelled to Notts County today.

The Clarets first went there in the League's first season in 1888.
