A SYMBOLIC wooden cross carried through the streets of Burnley in a Good Friday procession was pulled down by youths while parishioners prayed.

The Parish Priest for St John's RC Church, Father Michael Waters, said: "We were all very upset by this act of desecration of a sacred symbol at the very centre of the Christian belief.

The Burnley Lane Council of Churches, which includes St Andrew's, St Cuthbert's, the Baptist and Methodist Churches, the Church of Christ and St John's, held a procession of witness through the streets which attracted 100 people.

They the placed the cross in the ground outside St John's in Colne Road at the junction with Ivy Street.

Fr Waters said the youths damaged the hole that had been specially dug for the cross and now it has had to be stored inside the church. Police are investigating.
