THE government seems to give with one hand and take with the other. They give pensioners £100 for winter fuel payments - full marks for that - then take £1m winter payments, granted last year, away from Burnley Health Care Trust (LET, March 26). Extra help is not given on a regular basis.
This will mean extra staff and nursing care will be on hold with no extra beds for emergencies.
We'll be back to the position of patients being shunted from one hospital to another in the region, as all the hospitals will be in the same predicament. Patients will suffer or even die - trolleys on corridors again.
Is the £100 given to pensioners in the hope they will keep warm at home and not take up a hospital bed.
KATHLEEN BULCOCK (Mrs), Wilkie Avenue, Burnley.
