YOU don't have to be a German Shepherd to become a watchdog at Hindley Prison.
Anyone aged 18 upwards is eligible to be considered as a member of a prison Board of Visitors.
People from all backgrounds are needed to ensure prisoners are being cared for in accordance with prison rules.
"We can't offer any pay but will cover expenses," said a Visitors' spokesman.
"If you are the right kind of volunteer, you will find the work rewarding. It is important that the Board has a cross-section of the local community coming from all walks of life and from a wide age range."
Visitors attend monthly meetings and spend two or three days a month at the prison talking to prisoners and staff calling, sometimes unannounced, and inspecting all areas from cells to workshops and kitchens.
