BROOKIE Basics classes are available at Wigan and Leigh College.
A hotline, set up to help people like Channel 4's Brookside character, Naimh, who for years has hidden her illiteracy, has brought many inquiries through to college experts.
And callers have found that help is on their doorsteps.
Many people in the borough have discovered that they are not alone in worrying about the level of their ability in reading and writing since the Brookside storyline was aired.
A college spokesperson said: "Classes are held at both Leigh and Wigan campuses and take place in a friendly atmosphere in small groups.
"Once students get over the fear of coming they often discover talents which they didn't have the confidence to use before.
"Many have gone on to other courses, including computing, and made real strides towards a better future.
"If you, or a friend or relative have the same problems as Naimh all you have to do is contact Anne Boothroyd direct on 01942 761469."
