ETHNIC minorities now have a local voice following the establishment of the Leigh and Wigan Ethnic Minority Group.
At an inaugural meeting, in Leigh Town Hall, Group officers elected were: chairman Mohammed Anwar; vice chairman Shabbir Ahmed; secretary Khalid Shakeel; trustees Shammas Anwar, Arfak Ahmed, Sarfat Ahmed and Mrs Halima Sadya.
Associate members of the group are: Councillors Brian Jarvis, Mark Hale, Keith Cunliffe, Peter Smith and Brian Thomas, plus Kath Thomas, Jim Croft and Peter Bowdler.
Co-ordinator Cllr Jarvis said: "I'm more than pleased to assist and look forward to working with the Group. There is a growing ethnic minority in Leigh and councillors were approached to help form the group which emerged from Leigh Muslim Community Group."
