THE May elections are sure to throw up at least two new councillors in the Leigh area.
Two Wigan Council wards - Atherton and Hindley Green - this year see the retirements of two former mayors.
Jack Sumner has represented the Atherton ward since Wigan Metro was launched in 1974, while Ron McAllister has been the sitting member for Hindley Green.
The Greens are making a concerted effort as they fight for seats throughout the borough.
Green leader Chris Maile takes on Mark Hale (Lab) and Andrew Oxley (Con) at Hope Carr in what is expected to be a bitterly fought seat.
Four-cornered fights will be held at Hindsford, where current mayor Sam Little defends his seat and Robert Bleakley is the sole Lib Dem candidate, and Leigh East - where Labour's Keith Cunliffe defends opposition from Independent candidate John Sumner, Conservative and Green.
