AS tenants in the Willow Street flats move out, Bury Council are making no attempt to ensure the place is safe for those people remaining in the flats and in neighbouring properties which are not being demolished.

They began to brick up some of the empty flats, but then that worked stopped. As a result we had windows being put through at all times of the night - usually with the bricks that the council have left. Also, the flats which are still occupied are a prime target for thieves and vandals.

As a tenant of the flats I am waiting to be re-housed. I was offered a house so I collected the keys and went to view it. I was amazed and disgusted. In my view it wasn't fit for animals to live in, let alone humans.

Who is responsible for passing these properties as fit for letting? Just because the council want us out as soon as possible, do they really think that we should just accept any property that they offer, regardless of its condition?

When a property is accepted the council expect the tenant to keep it in a safe and habitable state. So I would expect the council officer passing it as habitable to be willing to live in such a property himself! After all, we are not living in Victorian times when slums were the norm.

DISGUSTED,

Willow Street, Bury
