THE first steps towards creating Leyland's town centre millennium dream were taken this week as the bulldozers moved in.
South Ribble chief executive Phil Halsall turned up to watch work begin on the Southern Towngate site.
The existing run down buildings will be replaced with a new Tesco superstore, while the market will be refurbished and nearby derelict land will be transformed into a massive leisure complex which will include a cinema and bowling alley.
Joining him was South Ribble's leader Gina Lewis, who described the vision of the old Co-op building coming down as a dream come true.
She said: "We have been waiting for a very long time for this to happen."
