HOUSING chiefs in Bury have put themselves on the alert to help Kosovo's helpless.
Should the British Government call upon local authorities to provide homes for refugees, Bury leaders are keen to ensure they are more than ready to do their bit.
While officials closely monitor the Kosovo situation, preparations are under way to ensure that, should Bury be called upon to provide emergency housing, some will be available.
Bury Council leader Derek Boden said: "It must be stressed that if we do anything it will only be as a response to a call from the UK Government.
"At the moment it is very much a case of 'stand to', with local authorities being asked to make preparations for a situation which might not develop. Obviously, it would be better if the refugees could return to their homes in Kosovo and that is what everyone wants to see happen.
"However, if there is a need for short-term accommodation for refugees then we are prepared to help out."
Coun Boden added: "We do not have a large supply of accommodation that we can use in this terrible situation. However, when you bear in mind the human tragedy unfolding in Kosovo, then every little bit may well count."
