WORKMEN unearthed the remains of two of Blackburn's favourite old pubs when they dug up the uneven path to Blackburn Cathedral.
The heavy traffic of lorries used for the rebuilding of the Lantern Tower caused subsidence on the main path to the cathedral, the former site of The Legs O' Man and The County pubs.
When they were demolished in the 1970s, the cellars were not properly filled.
Pockets of air and wood, which has since rotted away and compacted, made the path uneven.
When workmen took up the buckled path, they uncovered cellars of the old pubs and cottages.
They will now be examined by an archaeologist.
Canon Andrew Hindley said: "The Lancashire County Council's archaeologist will be present through the work next week to record and photograph any finds.
"It is the ancient centre of Blackburn and some of them were quite old buildings that in this day and age would have been listed, not demolished."
After an archaeologist's inspection next week, they will be re-filled and the path relaid.
