FIREFIGHTERS broke down the door and rescued a woman trapped in a first floor bedroom of a house after she called for help on her mobile phone.
Paramedics and police were also called to the house on Beech Street, Accrington, at 3.40am today and the woman was treated for shock and smoke inhalation at the scene.
Sub-officer Keith Cunliffe, of Accrington fire brigade, said: "The fire was mainly confined to a chair and a small piece of carpet in the living room but a woman in her mid-40s was trapped upstairs.
"We believe she telephoned for help from her mobile phone but was not injured.
"We found a packet of cigarettes near the chair and suspect the fire could have been started by a smouldering cigarette."
Mr Cunliffe added that there were no smoke alarms in the house.
He said: "I would like to urge everyone to have smoke alarms fitted."
