LEYLAND played host to the division two champions from Castleford, Yorkshire and put in the best performance of the season, winning 24-16.
In this game Warriors skilfully moved the ball in the backs through Simon Crowther, Greg Baron and Wayne Sumner and supported the hard running of prop Paul Cowling, centre Andy Scargill and scrum half Paul Brown. They gave the best defensive display of the year and led ontwo occasions but were just pipped at full time by the visitors. Tries were by man of the match Anthony Hughes and Paul Cowling. Conversions were added by Anthony Hughes.
WARRIORS U13s 42 MAYFIELD 4
IN an away game to Mayfield, the U13s carried on this season with another convincing win, scoring seven tries and seven conversions. The tackle count for the team was at its highest, at 110. Top tackler was Hal Pedlar. Tries were by James Jackson (3), man of the match James Franklin (2), Andy Bennett (2) and Stuart Brown was runner-up to both top tackler and man of the match awards, converting three tries in the match. WARRIORS U12s 48 BAMBER BRIDGE BULLDOGS 18
AN under-strength Bamber Bridge team was bolstered by Warriors and all players gave 100 per cent no matter what kit they were wearing. Once again the partnership of Matt Astley and Neel Byrom gave the last local derby blood to Warriors, but the Bulldogs fought back to close the gap to two points. Further scores by both sides gave a half-time score of 22-8 to Warriors. Constant pressure from the home side right from the second half kick off at first looked like a full invasion but the Bulldogs showed true spirit until the end. Scorers were Neel Byrom (6), Paul Warren, Matt Astley, Darly Warren, Daryl Cheetham and Shane Christie who was voted player of distinction. Dean Gallagher was man of the match and James Crowther was top tackler.
WARRIORS U11s 32 LONGSHAW ST RANGERS 32
AN away match for the U11s saw the opposition taking the lead until half-time due to bad defence and the team not working together. A half-time score of 22-6 to Longshaw looked as though they were going to win the game. In the second half Warriors came out with a different frame of mind, attacking well with the game finishing as a draw due to Mark Quinn putting the ball down in the final moments. Tries were by man of the match Jamie Glover (3), Mark Quinn (2) and Martin Bishop. Conversions were from top tackler Phillip Campbell.
