LABOUR claim in their recent leaflet 'In Bulk' under the heading 'That Smell!' that they have worked with local residents for the renewal of the Borrowdale Road sewer. Well, maybe they have, but why has it taken over 30 years, during which as far as I know they have represented Bulk ward, to achieve this?
They also refer to their introduction of traffic calming in Alfred Street, Freehold, Ridge and Newton to reduce traffic speeds and improve road safety. However, this is not really what the residents want, since, although safety is undoubtedly improved, repeated acceleration increased pollution. What they want is for through traffic (the 'rat runners') to be removed, and this can only be achieved by building a city centre relief road, long advocated by the Liberal democrats, but bitterly opposed by Labour.
