I HAVE read with interest the letters regarding the cost of works in Williamson Park.
While I would congratulate Cllr Fearnley on the work carried out, I would ask when is the park going to get some proper maintenance to the main horticultural features? Pruning is a lost art, whole areas are an overgrown wilderness. Most of the rockery features are under a mess of overgrown shrubs and smothered in leaf letter, which has been allowed to build up on the banks particularly around the lake area. The grass areas also suffer as no attempt is made to remove leaves in autumn. The eyesore of rusting shipping containers and the development of a mini-Salt Ayre tip at the 'stock car track' on Wyresdale Road Car Park needs addressing. I was a time-served gardener with the parks dept when the park had a dedicated work force. A regular maintenance schedule is what is required otherwise the effect of the new works will be wasted. I ask Cllr Fearnley: is there going to be funds available for the above? There's more to looking after the park than the memorial and Palm House area. A decade of benign neglect is going to take some pulling back.
