SUPER-fit scouts from Preston are set to loosen their woggles and dib-dib-dob down to the banks of the Lancaster Canal for a tough sponsored barge pull to raise cash for their group.

Members of the 6th Fulwood Scout group taking on the tough 12-mile narrow boat challenge this Saturday (April 24).

Dozens of venture scouts, scouts, cubs and beavers, will gather at Old Nells in Bilsborrow to drag the 60ft 'Imedit' narrow boat along the waterway to Haslam Park in Preston.

They are hoping to raise around £40,000 to enable their group to buy land at Beech Way, Fulwood, where their headquarters has been situated for 30 years.

The narrow boat is owned by retired scout leader Roy Eastham and wife Sheila, a former secretary at Waddecar scout camp, near Beacon Fell.

Venture scouts, aged 15-21, will use all their team building skills to get the challenge off to a flying start before other lads from the group join in and drag the boat along the towpath.

Group scout leader Tom Dean said: "We are hoping to raise lots of money for the scout group through this exciting challenge. All the lads are looking forward to it and it should be a good day if it all goes to plan.

"The money raised will enable the group to purchase the land on which our headquarters has been sited for the past 30 years."

The 6th Fulwood Scout Group hold weekly meetings in their purpose-built premises and enjoy canoe trips and camping holidays in their club minibus.

But, they need to raise cash to improve the club for future generations of dedicated scouts. So pop along on Saturday and give them a big cheer as well as a much needed donation.
