TURN out your cupboards, dig deep in your attics and clear out your sheds - you could be sitting on buried treasure about Winckley Square, which is destined for the history books.

That's the appeal being made by members of the newly formed Friends of Winckley Square action group who are determined to spruce up and preserve the picturesque Georgian square for generations to come.

They are calling on Prestonians to dig out their old possessions, pictures, photographs and artefacts for an exciting new collection about the site (pictured right), off Fishergate.

The memorabilia will form part of a unique collection and will be the focal point for the Party in the Park event, provisionally planned for July 4.

While the group already has lots of information, they are desperate to find other items and pictures which date back to when the square was created 150 years ago.

Assistant parks manager and group member Noel Murphy said: "We are looking for any stories, pictures or artefacts about the square which we could copy.

"There must be lots of people out there with items relating to the square that have been collecting dust for years.

"We want them to search their cupboards and attics to see if they have any bits and pieces we might be interested in.

"We are hoping to compile a unique collection to be used in leaflets or promotional events.

"The items loaned to us will be copied and returned to their rightful owners.

"Also, we are appealing for more members to join The Friends of Winckley Square group to help us improve and preserve the historic Square for generations to come."
