ST HELENS Combination outfit, The Anchor, created history on Thursday, when they lifted the LCFA Intermediate Cup for the second time in succession.
Their 5-3 extra-time victory means they become the first team to retain the trophy since Florence Albion's 1953-4 success and only the fifth to do so since Earlestown White Star started it off in 1893-94.
Their opponents, Tapes for Industry, beaten by The Anchor last season in an earlier round, were a vastly improved outfit and took The Anchorall the way.
Gary Ball started the scoring for The Anchor but by half-time Tapes had a 2-1 lead with Steve Oakley's penalty save saving red faces in the St Helens Star Prmier Division side's camp.
However, immediately from the re-start, Martin Hynes put The Anchor level, but again the defence had come to their aid, Steve Coakley in goal and Damien Owen and Steve Dearden having to excel themselves to save the day.
But, eventually this did not prevent a further goal for Tapes who led 3-2 and seemed home and dry until Owen put the ball over the Tapes line with just 23 seconds left on the official's watch.
The Anchor at last came good in extra time and a Martyn Hynes strike, plus a Mark Kelly special put The Anchor home and dry 5-3. The man of the match trophy, donated by E&G Trophies, was presented to keeper Steve Coakley.
