GETTING to Wembley next week will be a stroll for Haydock ARLFC . . .
Well, perhaps not quite a stroll.
For a group of the club's players and officials aim to walk all the way to the Twin Towers in a bid to raise much-need cash.
Saints' Great Britain hooker Keiron Cunningham will kick-off the event at the Haydock C&B Club, Ireland Road, this Saturday 1.30pm.
But the real hard work will begin on Monday at 8.30am, when a squad of 12 volunteers will head south.
Together, with two drivers in transit vans, the walkers aim to complete a total of 40 miles a day, collecting money on the way. A further six volunteers will join them on the Wednesday.
A club spokesman explained the reason for the walk: "With our current number of teams, we are finding it difficult to fulfil our weekend fixtures through a lack of facilities.
"So we believe the time is right to secure our own facilities in the area."
The club has already asked the council for help in preparing an application for funding by the National Lotteries Commission and Sports Council.
The spokesman added: "Dave Houghton, our hard-working junior section secretary has sent out 350 letters to large companies appealing for sponsorship, but with little success.
"We would, therefore, ask local businesses, the people of St Helens and rugby fans in general to help us.
"If you would like to help us please contact Dave Hoghton on 01942 719135."
The walkers aim to reach Wembley in time for the kick-off to the Challenge Cup Final between Leeds Rhinos and London Broncos.
