FOLLOWING the Star's Front Page story last week, Merseyside transport chiefs have scored a major success in their campaign against staffing cuts at St Helens stations.
First North Western train company this week announced that they have suspended the shedding of six frontline jobs pending a staffing review.
Merseytravel St Helens Councillor Terry Hanley has been leading the fight to maintain staffing levels and he welcomed the news.
He said: "Reducing staffing levels would be disastrous, with less help and security for rail users. And with fewer tickets sold and less revenue collected, it's plainly bad business for the train company.
"Merseytravel is investing in the development of areas like St Helens, with a new station at Lea Green on the way.
"Any move to reduce the efficiency of our rail network must be resisted if we are serious about regenerating St Helens to its full economic and leisure potential."
Councillor Hanley said he would be monitoring developments and will be keeping up the pressure for improvements on behalf of St Helens rail users.
