HOWEVER Tory leader William Hague intends to alter the structure of the House of Lords or even the present plans of the Labour Party for a shake-up, I do not think it will change the fact that hereditary peers, self-appointed, unelected members, will fight to remain in their present positions.
Many turn up (if they choose), take the perks that go with the job, then virtually go into hibernation or take a cat nap during the debates.
The House of Lords oversees and many times over-rides the decisions of the Lower House. I have severe reservations as to their usefulness - although there are many astute minds in their ranks.
I reckon a body of learned men, professors, scientists, business executives, etc, do a better job - but only then, be it by the wish of the people.
