CAMPAIGNERS fighting for traditional boundaries to be reinstated between the Red and White Rose counties will be staking their claim to the former dividing line on Saturday.
The Roses Alliance, made up of the Unite Craven and Friends of Real Lancashire groups, are staging a boundary marking day as part of their campaign to preserve the historical border between Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Unofficial road signs will be installed at 15 points in Ribble Valley and Pendle where roads cross the former county boundary which was changed under a local government shake-up in 1974. The signs will join others already in place on main A roads including the A56 between Kelbrook and Foulridge.
"The boundary marking day is to show that most people in the affected areas want the traditional boundary preserved and recognised as unchanged despite administrative changes," explained Geoff Hoyle, of the Unite Craven branch of the Yorkshire Ridings Society.
"We hope the county councils will accept this gesture in good faith and provide more permanent road signs to replace those we are installing."
He added: "We are not asking for change but merely requesting the recognition of something that is already there."
