BURNLEY must beat Manchester City in their final game of the season at Turf Moor next Tuesday night to avoid relegation from the Pontins League First Division.
Victory at the Reebok Stadium last night would have meant a draw in their last game would have been enough for the Clarets to send Barnsley down with Grimsby. But Burnley were denied three times by the woodwork, as Bolton, who hit the post once themselves, hung on to gain the point that guarantees their safety.
The Clarets could have gone ahead after just eight minutes but from Phil Eastwood's pin-point cross, Kevin Henderson, back on reserve team duty after injury, planted his header against the cross-bar.
But Burnley carved out another great chance before half-time when Brad Maylett released Henderson, who was thwarted by Matthew Glennon's block. The Clarets were caught cold after the break when the lively Anthony Magnacca struck the post from the edge of the penalty area.
And after the returning Paul Smith had headed against the outside of the far post from Maylett's cross following a Burnley break, Mawson was forced into a flying save to keep out an effort from Carl O'Malley.
However, the visitors finished the stronger and, after Henderson had seen his stinging drive held by Glennon, Eastwood was only a whisker away from a winner.
His delightfully flighted free-kick left Glennon stranded and the Bolton keeper couldn't believe his luck when the ball bounced off the inside of the post and then off his body to Rune Vindheim who couldn't hit the target.
Burnley reserves: Mawson, Maylett, Morgan (Devenney 46), Vindheim, Heywood, Reid, Williamson, O'Brien, Henderson (Ford 75), Eastwood, Smith (Shandran 60).
