FORTY detectives are now working on the case of a Burnley teenager who was dragged off the street into an alley and raped.

The 18-year-old victim was returning home from a night out in Burnley town centre when she was attacked in Middlesex Avenue.

She was dragged across a dual carriageway to an alleyway alongside the Manor Barn pub where the attack took place.

Police believe the attacker lives locally but say appeals for witnesses have had a disappointing response.

An incident room has been set up at Burnley police station and searches and house-to house-inquiries are also being carried out.

Detectives are now considering staging a reconstruction of the incident.

Detective Inspector Charles Lemmon said: "People will notice a significant police presence in the area as we continue our inquiries to solve this case."

The rapist was white, 5ft 8 to 10ins, in his late 20s to early 30s, of medium build with dark hair and stubble. He was wearing dark clothing and black shoes. He also smelled of body odour and cigarettes.

Anyone with information should contact police on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
