LEIGH RMI, with nothing to play for but pride, wound up their season at Hilton Park with a 1-0 loss to Chorley.
The score came after 11 minutes, just about the only time they troubled the home defence.
But a heavily-depleted RMI should still have won, creating ample chances but ending with woeful finishing.
Steve Tobin fired in a free-kick but Keith Evans, despite outjumping the defence, could not keep his header down; Ian Monk's super cross was wasted; Tobin should have done better when the ball was teed up for him on the edge of the box.
Sub Peter Smyth should have laid on a goal with his first touch of the ball, but Tony Black could only tamely head his cross straight at the keeper; Black brought a great save from the keeper; Matthews flicked the ball just wide.
Chorley's only other chance forced Dave Felgate to make a great fingertip save.
Leigh now finish the season at Gateshead on Saturday.
