WE are writing in support of the recent improvements to the Pointer Roundabout in Lancaster. The new design of the Bowerham Road junction makes it much safer for pedestrians to cross this road, and the new lane markings on the roundabout itself enable everyone (and especially cyclists) to navigate the roundabout more easily. We are convinced that the works will improve safety for the most vulnerable road users (particularly school children and elderly people), and may well help to save lives.
Scotforth Green Party has been campaigning to improve safety for pedestrians at the Pointer roundabout since February 1998. Residents of Meadowside were amongst the 400 people who signed our petition in favour of the idea. It is unfortunate that the council did not consult them further on the new road layout. However, we do not believe that they will be endangered by the scheme. The narrowing of the road may result in them having to wait a little longer at peak times to filter into the traffic, but this is no more inconvenient than the length of time that pedestrians usually have to wait to cross busy roads. It is not acceptable or realistic to expect people to walk up the hill and wait to cross at a pelican or zebra crossing, as suggested by the Meadowside residents.
While canvassing in recent weeks we have talked to hundreds of residents of Scotforth and Greaves and can assure your readers that the vast majority of comments about the roundabout works have been positive.
