CROOKS beware, Wigan Metro is boosting its fight against local crime.
Four new security vans will daily tour the hot spots of Leigh and Wigan.
The council's new patrols are being formulated with the help and co-operation of local police.
They will vary their routes and times every day, concentrating on the places and times which a recent Crime and Disorder Audit has shown up to be the worst.
Deputy Leader Cllr Tom Sherratt said: "Over the coming months our staff will receive appropriate training from the police and council senior security staff.
"The intention is not to take the place of regular police, but to become their extra eyes and ears and helpers.
"They will receive important local 'intelligence' from the new community safety groups, and when they start work they will soon build up expertise in knowing where to be and when and how to recognise developing situations."
