EAST Lancs youngster James Porter won the Blackburn Youth Trophy sponsored by Althams Travel when he defeated Peter Worden from Railway Hotel in a thrilling final.

After a long day of qualifying heats and an original line-up of 32 up-and-coming young bowlers, James and Peter brought the event to a fitting climax in a memorable final.

For the early part Peter held a slender lead and attained his best position at 14-10.

But James found a consistent length that eventually won him the game as he put together eight without reply.

Peter came back with some great bowls and at 20-19 saw his opportunity snatched away as James won the two vital points to win 21-20. The champion also had to pull out all the stops to overcome semi-final opponent Duncan Blades from Stoneyhill by another close margin 21-19.

Phil Johnson from Bacup Park also gave a good account of himself before losing to the champion 21-17.

Peter Worden also had to be on top form to reach the final at the expense of Darwen Subs youngster Stephen Clough.

Both boys provided a great contest that developed into a 32 end marathon recorded as the longest game of the day.

After the scores were level at 6-6 they peeled no fewer than six times on the way to a thrilling 21-19 finish.

Craig Ramell, representing host club Alexandra, did well until elimination by Stephen Clough as did Richard Hindle from Marsden Park who went down to Duncan Blades.

Organiser Jim Cunningham praised all the competitors.
