LOCAL racing cyclist Dave Hitchen was just pipped for the honours in Sunday's St Helens CRC Senior Road Race over 64 miles on the gruelling Clieves Hill circuit.
But there was consolation for Dave when his consistent high placing on each lap sprint paid off with top spot in the Thatto Cycles-sponsored points competition.
Dave from Billinge who rides for New Brighton was just 22 seconds behind the winner, elite rider Mike Jones of RG Travel.
Over in Yorkshire, Edmund Leary from Rainford got in the prize money for the first time this season when the junior rider gained a hard fought fifth place in the Mercury Racing criterium held over a hilly course outside Huddersfield.
The Rainford High pupil riding for his new club Chester RC- Team Lease Direct, who the week before competed in the 75 mile Junior Tour of Lancashire at Longridge, had to overcome the twin problems of a puncture and a wheel change during Saturday's race.
