Liverpool St Helens 26 Preston Grasshoppers 15 JEWSON League Two Champions, Preston, came to Moss Lane full of confidence, expecting to beat relegated League One side, LSH, in the Lancashire Cup.
At the end of the game, they no doubt realised that life in the higher division may not be a bed of roses. On an unpleasant evening, LSH, despite missing several regular first teamers, completely outplayed the visitors, especially in the forwards. The back row got among the Preston side and closed them down effectively.
The return of full-back Chris Glynn after injury was welcome. His kicking was exemplary both from hand and off the ground. He kicked three difficult conversions. Young half-backs Dominic Brown and Simon Worsley played steadily and got the three quarters moving at every opportunity.
Winger Neil Brooks showed his paces to score a good try. The other three were scored by forwards Bruce Thompson, Martin Boyd and Pilkington.
LSH must now be more confident for next season when they must consolidate and hope for a speedy return to Division One. A cup run would be the ideal booster, but a difficult away draw at Orrell in the next round will be a real tester. Monday May 3 kick off 3pm (to be confirmed).
