I READ with interest your comment 'Ageism claim must be investigated' (LET, April 19). I welcome your call for a thorough analysis of the services which the NHS provides for older people.
Age Concern has long called for an investigation of this kind; we believe that this would highlight where there is good practice and where standards need to be raised. It would also enable us to engage politicians and the public in informed debate.
We all recognise that the NHS has limited resources and professionals working within it have to take tough decisions; but there should be clear criteria for this.
Rationing decisions within the NHS should not be made on an ad hoc basis or behind closed doors. If the government continues to assert that all treatment is on the basis of need not age, then they should ensure that this is the case.
Over the coming year Age Concern will be collecting evidence of age discrimination in the NHS to present to the government. If your readers would like to get involved they can contact us for an information pack by calling 0345 009966.
