I AGREE that there are more than enough pubs in Lancaster (Citizen, April 30) The city has always had a large number of thriving pubs which boasted their own particular character but what we have seen over the years is the big breweries coming into the city and opening pubs which can cater for hundreds of people and sell beer at prices the smaller pubs are unable to match.
Some great pubs which were unique to Lancaster, such as the Fat Scot, the Priory and Tramway, no longer exist which is a great shame. Why is it that most breweries are obsessed with making their pubs attractive to students. Students have plenty of pubs geared up for them - they don't need any more (there are at least nine bars on campus) And here's me thinking they were hard up for cash!
