WHILE it is a scandal that British motorists have to pay the highest petrol taxes in Europe, it is an even bigger one that the government only spends a fifth of the £38 billion it rakes in on transport.
Not content with having the highest petrol taxes in Europe, the government is planning to hit the motorist with three new taxes, a workplace car-parking tax, new powers allowing councils to impose congestion taxes and charges on motorways and trunk roads.
Maybe my memory is not as good as it was, but I cannot remember Tony Blair mentioned that a Labour government would hammer British motorists during the 1997 General election campaign.
