Workington 4 St Helens Town 2 - St Helens Town 0 Prescot Cables 0 A SUN drenched bank holiday weekend saw Town complete their North Western Trains Division One programme.
First they stepped into the cauldron of Borough Park on Saturday when a new record attendance for the league was set up.
Back in 1958, 27,000 created the old ground's record attendance when Manchester United provided the opposition in an FA Cup tie but a more sedate 1,356 saw Town's visit on Saturday.
Town went into the game with six wins and a draw behind them following two excellent mid-week successes at Vauxhall GM (2-1) and Atherton Colls (3-1) but they were hit by an early whirlwind as the 'Reds' set up their championship success.
A very bad start saw Town overturned within 23 minutes when they were 2-0 down as defensive errors were punished by Holt and Wilson. Reilly had Town's best chance to reduce the arrears but only got glancing contact on Griffiths corner kick and things got worse on 34 minutes when Henney converted a cut back after Allison deserved more back-up following a good save from Swailes.
Town came back strongly after the break with Steve O'Neill rattling home within three minutes after Pennington's header had brought a fine reflex save from Dixon. Had Pellet converted a great chance to make it 3-2 on the hour the complexion could have been different but Workington magnified the error by going 4-1 up in the 73rd minute when the 'electric' Holt broke from the half-way line.
Laird came on for Town and his glancing header provided Pennington with a one-on-one with Dixon which the Town hit man finished with some aplomb but despite their fine recovery the damage had been done in the first half.
On Monday temperatures soared as Hoghton Road staged Town's last game of the season against neighbours Prescot Cables. Although scoreless it was not a dour affair as the North Western Trains Division One top sharpshooters (Steve Pennington Town 35) and Peter Cumiskey, Cables 34) fought out a duel in the sun. Neither increased their tally although Cables should have made more of first half supremacy despite Towns Gary Laird sending an 18th minute diving header against the post.
Town were far more effective after the break but couldn't find the final ball to open the door while a fine save by Prescot's young stand-in keeper Ryan McMahon denied Pennington in the closing stages while Town's Mike Allison did likewise to deny Taylor and preserve a draw which was frankly the right result.
Towns Lanes Trophies man of the match was Paul Clarke.
Town have finished eighth with their best moments being a 3-2 home win against runners up Mossley who were beaten on Monday at Workington giving the Cumbrians the title in a 'head to head'.
Cup wise Towns best FA Vase ran for years saw them reach the last 32 while only a penalty shoot out robbed them of a place in the North Western Trains League Cup final.
The club wishes to extend its thanks to supporters and main sponsors ICF Lift Truck Services.
