ONE of Stan Ternent's former clubs may no longer have a place in the Football League by tonight.

And the Burnley boss admits that Carlisle's demise has been a sad one.

"When I played at Carlise they were a good side with some good players. They were always in the First Division and then went up to the Premiership as it is now," said Ternent, who joined Carlisle from Burnley in 1968 and helped them into the top division in 1974.

"It's very sad what's happening. But I can't wish it isn't them because it will happen to someone else."

That someone else would be Scarborough if the Seasiders failed to beat Peterborough and Carlisle took three points from Plymouth this afternoon.

And Scarborough also have a Burnley link with Clarets goalkeeping coach Tony Parks between the posts for the North Yorkshire club.

FORMER Clarets striker Ian Duerden is reported to be a target for Bolton and Wolves after an impressive season for Doncaster was capped by two cup final goals. Duerden, released from Turf Moor at the end of last season, scored twice as Doncaster beat Farnborough to lift the Endsleigh Trophy - the equivalent of the Conference's league cup.

The 21-year-old's goals, in front of a crowd of 7,160 at Belle Vue, were his 18th and 19th of a season which started at Halifax Town before he dropped out of the Football League to kick-start his career with Doncaster in the autumn.

FORMER Barnsley player-manager John Hendrie was a guest of Stan Ternent at Burnley's game against Fulham last Saturday.

Hendrie, who lost his job at Oakwell a couple of weeks ago, played under Ternent at Bradford City in the mid-1980s and the two have remained in touch since.

"We managers have to stick together," said Ternent.

THE Clarets went into their final game of the season at Northampton today as the best current side in the division, bar Walsall, based on the last six matches. Ironically Burnley and Northampton are the only two sides in the division not to lose a game in that spell.

BURNLEY acknowledged Fulham's achievement in winning the Second Division title by welcoming them onto the Turf Moor pitch with a guard of honour.

However, the Clarets made sure the hospitality didn't go too far by taking all three points from the champions to guarantee their safety.

CLARETS defender Gareth West has been banned for two matches from today after collecting his second sending off of the season.

ACCRINGTON Clarets nominated Gemma Palmer as their supporter-of-the-year and Nicola Plummer as their top young supporter at the club's AGM this week. Phil Miller was re-elected as chairman and reported a small profit at the club's fourth annual meeting which was attended by 120 members.

ROSSENDALE Clarets are holding their player-of-season presentations in the Rose and Bowl, Stacksteads on Monday night. Tickets, including entertainment, cost £4.
