TOWNELEY High School pupil Steven Williams will be making music with the country's top musicians after winning a full scholarship to Chetham's School of Music, in Manchester.
Steven, 15, had two auditions for the school before being told he'd gained one of the much sought after places.
A member of the school's successful student band since it was formed, Steven started to play the cornet in year seven, went on to learn the baritone at the age of 12 and took up the trombone two years ago.
Head of Expressive Arts, Dave Warren, said: "He is extremely talented and I may even go as far as to say gifted. We are absolutely thrilled.
"It is great not only for him to get this recognition but also for the school and band.
"He is truly committed and will be looking to have a career in music. I wouldn't be surprised if he is playing in one of the top bands or orchestras in another few years."
